How Often Should You Replace Hi-Vis Clothing?

How often should you replace high-visibility clothing?

High visibility clothing is an essential piece to your safety program.  While PPE packages have evolved during the COVID-19 pandemic, hi-vis gear is still the most valuable piece to ensure that your workers are seen on the job site. Like all workwear, hi-vis clothing is not designed to last forever and using it beyond it's lifespan can be dangerous.

Typically, hi-vis gear should be replaced every 6 months.  The overall lifespan of the gear depends greatly on the work environment as well as the frequency that items are worn and washed.  Stains, spills, splashes and other damage can also affect the visibility of the gear in various lighting.  With items like t-shirts, you might not expect them to last 6 months.

Every safety plan has guidelines, and your hi-vis gear shouldn't be any different.  It's important to have requirements for your staff and regular inspections of their equipment to ensure a safe workplace.  Safety gear should always be replaced if it shows visible signs of age, including:

  • Tears, Rips or Fading
  • Stained or Dirty
  • Excessively worn
  • Not visible within the required distance in varying working conditions

To assist with a prolonged lifespan, hi-vis gear should be properly cleaned and stored after each use.  Keeping gear out of direct sunlight and heat during storage will aid in an increased lifespan. Following these simple steps will help keep your employees seen and safe.
